Media briefing on the situation in DRC: Calling upon all actors to put forward national interests first

On Sunday July 5th, 2026 we joined the youth pressure group called ” Alert RDC) in a Press Conference which brought together various media houses in Kinshasa. This event was organized in light with the current political hit caused by President Felix Tshisekedi move to change the Constitution in order to allow him to stand for the third term as claims the opposition and a faction of religious leaders who are opposed to the change of the constitution. This also came in at a time when the opposition and religious leaders where invited in Burundi for consultations with the Chairperson of the African Union His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye called for consultations.

However within the population and among actors of the Civil Society we are wondering if what political leaders are proposing are really the priorities of the country which is at war and faced with severe humanitarian crisis with millions of Internally Displaced Persons without aid.

We believe that the current priorities of the central government should focus on establishing peace in eastern parts of the country, the construction of roads, schools, hospitals, creation of jobs, restore electricity and water as well as the authority of the state in the whole country. Efforts should focus on issues around good government and national unity among others. We are aware about the challenges posed by the current Constitution and we are not opposed to efforts that can be deployed in order to improve it, however we believe that it may not be a priority as these issues cannot be solved by the change of the constitution.
