Evaluation meeting to analyze the causes of community resistance against Ebola Campaigns in Ituri

Analyzing the Community Resistance against different interventions to fight Ebola in Ituri Province DRC
On Saturday September 26th, 2026 our team in Bunia Ituri held an evaluation meeting in order to analyze why some members of the communities have not yet embrace the campaigns against Ebola, on contrary some have resisted against these campaigns.
The Common Person
We identified first of all the common person who has no other source of information a part from who he/she hears from other people. Many among these common people have not yet been reached out by the campaign about Ebola. The only information they have is from fellow community members who also have limited information about Ebola and this is the first cause about widespread of wrong information.

Community Opinion Leaders:
In some places these opinion leaders are playing a critical role to create awareness among community members, however not all of them have been fully informed, many have wrong and negative information about Ebola.
Political Actors at local levels
Generally political actors who do not benefit directly from Ebola funds have negatively manipulated communities to organize acts of violence about the Ebola Teams who are viewed as “outsiders” coming to harm the communities. The youth have played a frontline roles in these violent attacks against the Ebola Riposte Teams.
Politics at National and International Levels
The riposte against Ebola has been highly viewed as strategy for a category of actors at national level and international to make money for themselves. This person in the village said “people are coming from places we do not know just to get money using Ebola, they are being paid millions of dollars but we the communities earn nothing in this Ebola”.

This evaluation helped us to understand very the current situation and propose appropriate interventions.
Our model is not to come with people from the communities in order to do the campaign and go back, our approach is to empower members of the communities themselves in order to get involved because we are part of the communities. And this is unique, involving young people. Some issues may need advocacy at national and international levels especially the need to put into the hands of the communities all the necessary support so that they can themselves respond.
