Global Refugee Leaders Forum

The Global Refugee Leaders Forum promotes and empowering refugee leaders, amplifying their activities and participating in their protection when they are in difficult situations. Before refugees reach the offices of UNHCR and other international organizations they have already passed through the hands of refugee leaders, but in most cases their work is not recognized. In the Democratic Republic of Congo for example refugee leaders are the only ones on ground working for the well-being of thousands of refugees. But no one takes care of these refugee leaders when they are in difficult situations. Now we are here to support them so that they can be more effective and expand their services to fellow refugees.

Habamuremye Angelo

He was one among the Community Refugee Leaders in Goma City, the Democratic Republic of Congo, he was deported back to Rwanda where he feared about his life. Many other Rwandan refugees have been deported back to Rwanda against their will, unfortunately the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees known as UNHCR is highly involved in the deportation of Rwandan Refugees. Very little exist on the fate of those who have been forcefully deported back. Currently Rwandan refugees in Goma are at high risks as UNHCR together with AFC/M23 and the Rwandan Government are hunting them and taking them back to Rwanda.

Angelo remains our Advocacy role-model in the fight against refugee forced repatriation, deportation and refoulement practices which have been common in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the years. This practice should stop and DRC Government has to abide with its international obligations and UNHCR in DRC should stop facilitating and supporting deportation of refugees in order to satisfy the appetite of President Paul Kageme of Rwanda.

More Refugee Leaders are currently at risk in Goma, South Kivu especially those from Rwanda and we call upon people of good will to help us put in place interventions that can promote their protection and minimize security risks. That is why we put in place a fundraising campaign to support refugees leaders.
